Symphony to a Lost Generation is an arena-scale account of World War 1, featuring a new symphony, 200 musicians, 250 actors and dancers – and being performed in local theatres. It is also the world’s first feature length holographic production.

Through music, drama, dance and archival film, the War is traced from the ‘gathering clouds’ of 1910 through to the conflict itself, through to the Lost Generation it left behind.  It traces the archetypes and experiences that existed across national borders and myths – the new recruit, the pregnant widow, the soldier stranded in no-man’s-land, the husk of a man returning from war.

With an Oscar winning and Grammy nominated production team, the work makes use of groundbreaking holographics to allow individual battles and people to blend into one another, and ultimately to show how easily that horrific past can become our present.

Symphony to a Lost Generation premieres in Spring 2016, before travelling to local theatres across Europe. FIRST TOUR DATES TO BE ANNOUNCED JANUARY 2016.

With Symphony to a Lost Generation, I sought, most of all, to show the living presence of the First World War in our time, and the extent to which the world it created continues to reverberate in our lives today. I sought to make use of every artform and technology at our disposal – holograms in particular – to create a comprehensive picture of that awful time, a picture unbound by borders or the frames of greying histories.

I also sought to create a work on the scale of the opera houses of the great capitals that would not remain trapped in such gilded cages, and could be taken to small towns and cities across Europe – to create a work making use of the world’s finest musical performers which could be seen, heard and experienced everywhere.
